eat. icing on the cookie.

I’ll admit it; I give cupcakes a lot of attention.  They are happy little symbols of celebration, not to mention the fact that they are incredibly tasty. But there is something to be said for the classic treat – the cookie. Whether paired with milk or by itself, this treat is a symbol of tradition, maybe even home or rest or a job well done.

So today, when I needed something special to take to a meeting, I opted for cookies. On top of being more transportable than the cupcake, this occasion was the perfect excuse to visit the nearby cookie bakery, Icing on the Cookie.

Located on Central Avenue in Homewood, AL, don’t let the building fool you into thinking they do orders only.  Park in the lot or on the street. Walk right in. There are cookies ready for you. Of course, if you want a specific shape, color, or if you have a larger order, give them notice – 48 hours at least. But if you are willing to take the risk and skip the icing, you won’t be disappointed.

The dozen cookies I carried away included sugar, chocolate chip, white chocolate macadamia, ginger, oatmeal raisin, and monster (a clever name for the amalgam of ingredients). According to the taste-testers, my coworkers and myself, all the flavors were excellent! I can vouch for the iced cookie as well… SO good!

In exploring their website and blog, you’ll see all sorts of ideas for special events or ways to make the daily grind special. I have a feeling they would be up for the challenge of most shapes, sizes, and interests. If you are the creative type that would rather decorate your own, they host parties where you can do just that.

What are you waiting for? Pick up a cookie; grab your cup of hot coffee/tea or glass of cold milk; and give yourself that moment to look back at the day with a sigh. Cupcakes aren’t going anywhere.
